Description:
Danish master drummer Alex Riehl, a lyrical royal piano trio, always curious and always up for a new challenge, is an important innovator of modern drumming in Europe. He was one of the first to record a "free" solo on his debut album in 1965. A founding member of the beat group Savage Rose, he has performed with Bill Evans, Ben Webster, and Dexter Gordon, as well as with Monica Zetterlund. In the last two decades, he has performed with Enrico Pieranunzi, Kenny Warner, and Mads Vinding. For this film, Alex Riel has produced with two musical "playmates" as members. Like Riel, legendary bassist Bo Stief belongs to the generation that began their professional careers in Montmartre in the 60s. Carsten Dahl, one of the most innovative piano players in Europe. The result is a piano trio that can complement each other's playing with an exquisite sense of balance. The 11 pieces on this album are truly diverse. These include Keith Jarrett's classic "My Song," Dahl's dedication of "Poet" to the poetically performing Lille, a melancholic Swedish folk song reminiscent of legendary pianist Jan Johansson, and four American jazz standards, including John Coltrane's. John Coltrane's "Giant Steps," in particular, is a lyrical ballad in contrast to the powerful original version, and is a pleasure to listen to and compare.
