Issued in 1966 by the Ryukyu Islands postal authority, this 3¢ stamp beautifully depicts the Kerama Deer (Cervus nippon keramae), a rare subspecies of the Sika Deer found only on the Kerama Islands of Okinawa. Against a serene blue seascape with distant islets, the brown-spotted deer stands as a symbol of the region’s unique wildlife and natural heritage. The Japanese inscription at the bottom identifies it as a designated natural monument, celebrating local conservation efforts prior to the reversion of the islands to Japan in 1972.
