Hand-painted goat leather
Negligible
12-inch hand-painted traditional tholu bommalata leather puppet of a South Indian woman. The puppet has joints at the waist, shoulders, elbows, wrists and ankles, so you can place it in a number of poses.
The puppet is flat and translucent, allowing light to shine through and make the colours glow. It is painted on both sides, so you can place it facing either direction.
A great way to display this product would be by framing it between two acrylic or glass sheets and placing it in front of a light source (like a window or lamp). This will make its bold lines and vibrant colours come to life.
Tholu bommalata roughly translates to 'dance of the leather puppets', and is a centuries-old form of shadow puppet theatre from the South Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Tholu bommalata puppeteers mainly reenact stories from the Hindu epics Ramayana and Mahabharata, and usually perform through the night.
Being hand painted, this product is unique in itself, and its tiny imperfections are what make it special.
